Black mold removal follows the same contained process as any mold remediation job, with one difference: Stachybotrys grows only where water has soaked cellulose materials — drywall paper, wood, cardboard — for a long time. So the removal always comes with a hunt for a long-running leak.

Short answer

Do not scrub or spray black mold. Close off the area, stop the water source and call for an inspection. Professional removal of a typical basement wall section costs $1,500 to $3,500; larger areas run $15 to $31 per square foot.

What Is Black Mold?

Stachybotrys chartarum is a greenish-black mold that grows on materials high in cellulose and low in nitrogen, such as drywall paper, ceiling tiles and wood. It needs near-constant wetness, so it is less common than the gray-green Aspergillus and Penicillium molds found in most basements. Many dark molds look black, so color alone cannot identify it — only a lab can.

Is Black Mold More Dangerous Than Other Mold?

The CDC's position is that all indoor mold should be removed the same way, regardless of type, and that there is no need to identify the species before cleaning. Stachybotrys can produce mycotoxins, but the CDC notes that a link between "toxic mold" and rare health conditions has not been proven. What is certain: mold exposure of any kind can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. We cover the health questions in detail in our guide Is black mold dangerous?

Keep sensitive people away. Children, older adults, and anyone with asthma, allergies or a weakened immune system should stay out of a basement with visible black mold until it is removed.

Where Black Mold Grows in Eagle Mountain Basements

  • Behind finished drywall next to a window well that floods during spring snowmelt.
  • On the bottom 1–2 feet of walls after a water heater or washing machine leak.
  • On wood framing and the back of drywall around a slow plumbing leak in a basement bathroom.
  • On cardboard boxes and paper stored directly on a damp concrete floor.

Not sure the dark patch is mold at all? A mold inspection with lab sampling settles it before you pay for removal.

How Professionals Remove Black Mold

  1. Confirm the water source is stoppedBlack mold means long-term wetness. The leak is found and repaired first.
  2. Set up containment and negative airPoly sheeting, zipper doors and a HEPA air scrubber keep spores in the work zone.
  3. Cut out moldy drywall and insulationDrywall is removed past the visible growth and past wet readings, bagged in heavy plastic and taken out.
  4. Clean the framingWood is HEPA-vacuumed, sanded or blasted where growth has penetrated, then HEPA-vacuumed again.
  5. Clean the whole contained areaEvery surface is HEPA-vacuumed and damp-wiped to remove settled spores.
  6. Dry and verifyMaterials are dried to normal moisture content and the area is visually inspected; clearance testing is optional.

Can You Remove Black Mold Yourself?

For a small patch — under about 10 square feet — on a hard surface with no ongoing leak, the EPA says a homeowner can usually do the cleanup with detergent and water, wearing an N-95 respirator, gloves and goggles. Black mold on drywall is different: the growth is inside the paper, so wiping only removes the surface. Cutting drywall without containment spreads spores through the house. For anything bigger, our Eagle Mountain basement mold specialists handle it inside containment.

Our DIY versus professional mold removal comparison lays out the size limits and safety gear the EPA describes.

Can a House Be Saved From Black Mold?

Almost always. Black mold grows on the surface and inside porous materials — it does not "infect" the structure. Once moldy drywall, insulation and carpet are removed, the framing and concrete are cleaned and dried, and the leak is fixed, the home is as sound as before. Homes need major rebuilding only when long-term water has rotted structural wood, which is rare in Eagle Mountain's newer housing.

Can You Get Rid of Black Mold Permanently?

You can remove the growth permanently. Whether it stays gone depends on water. Stachybotrys needs materials that stay wet for days or weeks, so the permanent part of the fix is moisture control:

  • Repair the leak, window well or drain that soaked the wall.
  • Rebuild with mold-resistant drywall and a gap between drywall and slab.
  • Keep basement humidity between 30% and 50%.
  • Install a leak sensor near water heaters and laundry hookups.

Bleach on Black Mold: What the Agencies Say

The CDC says a bleach solution — no more than 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water — or dish detergent can clean mold from hard surfaces such as tile, sealed concrete or a bathtub, with windows open and never mixed with ammonia. The EPA adds that biocides should not be a routine part of remediation, because dead mold can still trigger allergies. Neither approach reaches black mold inside drywall paper, which is why it is cut out instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to have black mold removed?

Most Eagle Mountain basement jobs cost $1,500 to $3,500 for a wall section and $3,000 to $7,000 for a room. Small hard-surface patches can be under $1,500.

Is black mold common in Utah?

Less common than in humid states, because Utah air is dry. It shows up where a leak keeps drywall or wood wet for weeks — a flooded window well, a slow pipe leak or a failed water heater.

How can I tell if mold is black mold?

You cannot tell by color. Several harmless and allergenic molds are dark. A lab test identifies the species, but the CDC says removal is the same regardless of type.

What kills black mold naturally?

Removal beats killing. Dead mold can still cause allergic reactions, so the EPA recommends physically removing growth and fixing moisture rather than relying on vinegar, bleach or sprays.

Should I test before removing black mold?

Testing is not required to remove mold you can see. It helps when you need documentation for a home sale or want to find hidden growth.

Can a house be saved from black mold?

Yes. Moldy porous materials are removed, framing and concrete are cleaned and dried, and the leak is fixed. Structural replacement is only needed if long-term water rotted the wood.
